Frequently Asked Questions

What size blue catfish can I catch in winter?
December through February is trophy time on Lake Tawakoni. We usually land 6 to 20 fish a trip, with a real shot at blue catfish from 20 all the way up to 80 pounds. You'll see fewer fish than in spring, but they run much bigger. I bring heavy tackle and bait and help you land the big ones, so bring a camera for the photos.

What should I wear on a winter catfish trip?
Dress in layers you can add or peel off as the day changes. Open water gets cold quickly when a north wind is blowing, so a windproof outer layer, a warm hat and gloves you can slip off to handle a rod make a big difference. Waterproof boots keep your feet dry and warm. Pack a rain jacket if the weather looks iffy.

Why is spring the busiest catfish season?
March through May is the time for eater-size blue catfish on Lake Tawakoni. As the water warms, blues feed hard, and we often catch 50 or more fish in the 5 to 10 pound range. That kind of action makes it the season everyone wants, so trips fill up. If you have dates in mind, call (940) 229-0288 early and we'll lock one in.

Should I book a morning or afternoon trip?
In spring I run both morning and afternoon trips. Mornings suit anglers who like an early start and cooler air. Afternoons work well if you're driving in from out of town or want a slower start to the day. Both trips go after the same eater-size blues, so pick the time that fits your group, then call and tell me how many are coming.

Why do summer catfish trips start at daylight?
Channel catfish bite well in the cooler hours of the morning, and North Texas summer afternoons get hot on open water with no shade. Starting at daylight puts you on fish while they're active, and we usually limit out at 25 fish per person in 2 to 4 hours. That gets you back in before the heat, with your fish cleaned and ready to eat.

Are summer channel cat trips good for kids?
Summer channel cat trips are great for kids and first-timers. The bites come steady, the fish are a size kids can reel in, and the morning finish keeps everyone out of the worst heat. I have kids' life jackets on board, but if you have one that fits your child snug, bring it. I'll help with casting and landing fish.

What will we catch on a fall catfish trip?
Fall is a transition season on Lake Tawakoni. As the water cools, catfish change where and how they feed, so I fish for whatever is biting, channel cats or blues. Give me a call before your trip and I'll tell you exactly what to expect, so your group knows whether to plan on a lot of eater fish or a shot at bigger ones.

How does weather affect fall catfishing?
Cold fronts are the big factor in the fall. A front can drop the water temperature, change the wind and shift where catfish hold for a few days. Stretches of stable weather between fronts tend to fish well. If weather makes it unsafe to be on the water, I'll call you a couple of days ahead and we'll reschedule your trip.

How big a group can you take fishing?
From a couple of buddies to a family reunion, call (940) 229-0288 and tell me how many are coming and what you want to catch. I'll work out the right setup for your group. Bigger groups should call early, especially for spring, which is my busiest season and fills up first. Have a few dates in mind when you call.

Do my kids need a Texas fishing license?
In Texas, anglers under 17 don't need a fishing license, but anyone 17 or older does. Rules can change, so check with Texas Parks and Wildlife before your trip and bring licenses for everyone who needs one. I have kids' life jackets on board, but if you have one that fits your child snug, bring it along.

What's included in a guided catfish trip?
Bait and tackle are provided, and I handle the boat, the setup and finding the fish. I'll help you cast and land fish, and your catch gets cleaned so it's ready to cook. You bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a cooler with drinks and snacks, a rain jacket if the weather looks iffy, and your fishing license.

When is the right time to book a catfish trip?
Trips run 365 days a year, and each season fishes differently: winter for trophy blues, spring for eater blues, summer for channel cats and fall for whatever is biting. Spring is the busiest, so book early. Call (940) 229-0288 with your dates, your group size and what you want to catch, and I'll set you up.
